It has to be tough in internal communications when it seems like the only news to pass along is bad news. But there is one thing worse than bad news.
No news.
In tough times, executives may get nervous and restrict employee communications going out or put a halt all together. Or other leaders just don't share news because because they are tired of the negative news as well. And maybe everything is just pure fluff.
The vacuum created by the lack of chewable and digestible information can suck the life, breath by breath, out of employee morale. Employees will always turn to each other when there is a communications void. Employees will talk and before you know it, rumors become fact. And taking down a rumor mill is an unenviable task. The grapevine is always ripe with, "Did you hear this?" and "Oh, my, I can't believe they did this."
Even if it's only upsetting information, it's the responsibility of internal communications professionals to keep employees in the know. You must trust your coworkers that they can handle the information. Make sure you're using the all of the appropriate channels (newsletters, emails, digital signage, etc) to share updates.
Don't let a communications void suck the life out of your employee morale.
